He painted The Starry Night from the window of an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence — June 1889, the village asleep below, the sky alive above. He had been there twelve months, and would leave with this and seventy other canvases.

He painted fast and he painted thick. The pigment on his canvases stands several millimetres proud of the surface. We can't reproduce that texture, but on archival cotton at full scale, you can see every decision he made — every yellow he layered, every wave of the brush in the sky.
