The story of Café Terrace at Night

A café's gas-lit terrace glows yellow-orange onto the cobbles of a narrow street while the sky above goes deep blue and fills with stars. A waiter in white moves between the tables, and a couple walks off into the dark. Van Gogh painted it in September 1888 in Arles, on the spot, at night, and wrote to his sister that he was pleased to have painted a night scene without using any black. It is in the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands. The café is still there on the Place du Forum, repainted yellow to match.

On a wall, this is the warmest of Van Gogh's night paintings. The dominant colors are the lamp-yellow and orange of the awning and wall against a sky of deep blue and violet, with green in the shutters and the tree and blue-gray cobbles. It suits a kitchen, a dining room, a home bar, an entryway, or a bedroom, and it fits bistro, farmhouse, mid-century, and warm-modern interiors. It is a tall image. We offer it up to the Large at 24 × 29.9 in, the size that makes the terrace feel like a place you could sit, and the Medium at 16 × 20 in works above a bar cart or a kitchen table.

Starry Night Over the Rhône was painted the same month and is its natural companion. The Night Café is the room inside, in much harsher colors, and The Starry Night is where the stars went next. More from Vincent van Gogh.

Printed in our studio from a public-domain photograph of the Kröller-Müller canvas, holding the yellows and blues where Van Gogh set them.
