The story of Wanderer above the Sea of Fog

A man in a dark green coat stands on a spur of rock with his back to you, a walking stick in one hand, looking out over a valley that has filled with fog so that only the peaks and a few trees show through. Friedrich painted it in 1818 in Dresden, and it is at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The man is standing where you would stand, so you see what he sees, and because he never turns around you can be him. It has become the image people reach for whenever they want to show someone facing the unknown, which is why it is on a thousand book covers.

On a wall, the Wanderer is cool, pale, and calm. The dominant colors are the white and gray of the fog, a soft blue sky, the dark brown rock in the foreground, and the near-black of the figure, so it is nearly monochrome and suits almost any wall. It fits a study, a bedroom, a home office, a stairwell, or an entryway, and it belongs with Scandinavian, minimalist, modern, and moody interiors. It is a tall image. We offer it up to the Medium at 16 × 20.5 in, the size that gives the view enough depth, and the Small at 12 × 15.4 in is right above a desk or in a pair with another Friedrich.
