The story of A Dash for the Timber
Frederic Remington's 1889 painting that made his national reputation — eight horsemen galloping flat-out across an Arizona plain away from pursuing Apaches, firing back as they ride. The painting was a sensation at the National Academy show in New York and effectively established Remington as the visual chronicler of the closing American West. It hangs today at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth.
