The story of Portrait of a Young Woman, Called Miss Sparrow

Gainsborough's portrait of a young Englishwoman traditionally identified as Miss Sparrow, painted in his Bath or London years in the loose late style — silk-blue gown, light-touched hair, the eye drawn straight to the open expression of the sitter. The exact identity of Miss Sparrow has never been firmly established; the portrait survives as one of Gainsborough's most charming small society works.

Thomas Gainsborough

Thomas Gainsborough was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Along with his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds, he is considered one of the most important British artists of the second half of the 18th century. He painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes.
