The story of Rest

Vilhelm Hammershøi's wife Ida is seen from behind, her hair coiled into a low bun, her shoulders curved in dark dress against the pale grey wall of their Copenhagen apartment at Strandgade 30. Painted in 1905, Rest is the quietest and most-pinned of Hammershøi's interiors — Danish Symbolism at its most introverted. The painting hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and stands as one of the great images of contemplation in late-19th-century European art.

Vilhelm Hammershøi

Vilhelm Hammershøi, often anglicised as Vilhelm Hammershoi, was a Danish painter. He is known for his poetic, subdued portraits and interiors. In 1905, Rainer Maria Rilke wrote of the artist, "Hammershøi is not one of those about whom one can speak quickly. His work is wide-ranging and slow, and at whatever moment one comprehends it, it will always provide an opportunity to talk about what is important and essential in art".
