The story of Arabs Crossing a Ford

Fromentin's small group of mounted Arabs picking their way across a shallow stream in the Algerian interior, painted from sketches he made on his three extended journeys through North Africa between 1846 and 1853. The hot light, the spare landscape, and the close-up movement of the horses make this one of his most-pinned Orientalist canvases. Like much of Fromentin's work, it is held in major French and American museum collections.
